Solid-state batteries (SSB) have a solid-state electrolyte in place of liquid electrolytes, the technology has the promise of increased energy density and improved safety over current lithium-ion batteries. SSB are being rapidly developed by most major battery producers and EV car manufacturers with a view to commercialisation in the second half of the decade. Advantages of SSBs include:

No liquid leakage and low flammability. Higher operating voltage, fast charge and discharge rate. Wider temperature range of operation and they are particularly tolerant of higher temperature operation.
The solid-state electrolyte is a key component in solid-state batteries. Inorganic crystalline materials and inorganic amorphous materials form the main solid-state electrolytes. These electrolytes have high elastic moduli, strong thermal/chemical stability, a wide electrochemical stability window, high lithium ionic conductivity coupled with low electronic conductivity. These electrolytes are ideal for rigid battery designs and harsh environments such as EV applications. Electrolytes are typically based on oxides, sulphides or phosphates and many contain aluminium
